The restitution of the Benin Bronzes

The Bronzes were looted from the Royal Palace during a British military expedition to Benin City in 1897. They currently reside in the British Museum, where the Trustees are unable to approve the Nigerian Government’s request for their return without amendments to the British Museum Act 1963 (British citizens can sign a petition).

Whilst the moral argument for the Bronze’s restitution is unquestionable, we acknowledge the practical difficulties in restoring their physical custody at this time. We believe there exists a blockchain-based solution.

We advocate for use of an NFT that confers ownership of the physical bronzes to the NFT’s owner, the Nigerian people, whilst using a smart contract to stipulate payment per in-person viewing to a trust charged with their protection.
